Verdict
Contested. Reachable, but not quickly.
Every source the engines cited for legal CRM questions was an article about the category rather than a vendor's own site. Not most of them: all of them. Ask an engine which practice management software a small firm should use and it answers out of roundups, review sites and law-firm blogs, and it does not quote the product pages of the products it is naming.
That makes the bar misleading if you read it on its own. At 41 it looks reachable, and the market leader sits at 77 with a position of 71, so on paper there is room underneath. But the sites between 41 and 58 are not small vendors finding a way in. They are legal publications and comparison sites, which is a different kind of site from yours and not one you can become.
The route in is therefore not to out-rank Clio. It is to be named inside the pages that already get quoted, which on this evidence is the only mechanism operating in this market at all.
clio.com scored 77 against a bar of 41. It cleared the bar on 3/3 of this market’s questions, and on 3/3 of them a site scoring below the bar was cited anyway.
The second number is the one that matters. When sites under the bar keep appearing in answers, the bar is describing the middle of a distribution rather than guarding a gate, and there is a tail to get into.
Stop optimising your own product pages for these questions and start getting into the roundups. Every single cited source was somebody else's article.
We asked the questions a buyer in this market actually asks, read every domain the engines cited in the answers, and scored each cited domain with the proprietary Peak Answer Link Ranking system. The bar is the score of the weakest quartile of cited sites, which tells you how small a site can be and still get quoted — basically how winnable the niche is for new players entering the space. Measured 09/23/2026. Engines change mentions overtime, so these may drift.
Two honest limits. The sample is the questions we chose, and a different set of questions in the same market would move these numbers. And scores are a model of authority, not a measurement of it: they are the same model the product uses on itself, which is the reason to trust the comparison between niches more than any single figure.
Peak Answer asks your buyers’ questions every week, reads every source the engines cite, and tells you which questions name a competitor instead of you.
