What was measured

The study asked 30 questions in three bands: 5 general, 15 medium and 10 specific. It used ChatGPT and Google organic results, with 1 run per question. That gave 478 citations on 173 domains.

A general question is like "best email verification tool". A specific one adds constraints such as catch-all handling, an API, pricing per verification or an integration.

Who gets cited

Established vendors took 49% of citations and small providers' own sites took 43%. Forums and social took 5%, and third-party sources (directories, review sites and publishers) took 2%. The set is mostly vendors.

zerobounce.net, usebouncer.com and hunter.io are the vendors cited most, on 22, 13 and 11 of 30 questions. emailable.com is an example of a small provider. Publishers barely appear, and ecosystem.hubspot.com is the one cited most, on 2 questions.

The communities cited are reddit.com, youtube.com and linkedin.com, on 8, 3 and 3 of 30 questions.

First-party and third-party citations by question type

With both engines pooled, own-site share is 29% on general questions, 41% on medium and 53% on specific. ChatGPT goes from 35% on general to 58% on specific. Google organic goes from 23% to 49%. Both engines cite small providers' own sites more on specific questions than on general ones.

Third-party share is small across the question types: 0% on general, 3% on medium and 1% on specific. The work here is in vendor and own-site pages. Directories matter little.

On all 30 questions the entry bar is 30 and the median cited site scores 54. On the first 4 questions alone the bar read 55.

What to do first

  • Write pages that answer the specific constraints: catch-all handling, an API and per-verification pricing. Small providers' own sites take 53% of citations on specific questions.
  • Publish comparison and alternatives pages on your own site. Established vendors and small ones both win citations with them.
  • Show up in the Reddit threads about verifiers (reddit.com).
  • Check which of your pages the engines already cite.

Own pages get cited here, so the next step is to score a page with the free AEO checker on how easily an engine can quote it.

Caveats

  • The bar depends on the question set. 4 questions gave 55 and all 30 give 30. This page uses the deeper figure.
  • The study used 1 run per question. ChatGPT's repeat runs of one question overlap about 30% on cited domains. A citation is not a recommendation.
  • The labels are automated. 5% of citations are on unscored domains and are left out of the bar. The authority ceiling is 45.
