AI Overview Checker

This free AI Overview checker shows whether Google displays an AI Overview for a search, which pages that AI Overview cites, and whether your site is one of them. It also shows where each cited page ranks in Google's regular results.

What the AI Overview checker shows

Enter your domain and up to five searches. For each search, the checker loads Google's results the way a signed-out user in the US sees them (or in the country you pick), and reports:

  • whether an AI Overview showed
  • the first lines of the AI Overview
  • every page it cites, with that page's position in the organic results if it ranks
  • whether your domain is cited, and where it ranks
  • a recommendation for next steps to improve your domain's standing

The checker waits for AI Overviews that load after the rest of the page. On 17 October 2026, we loaded 493 Google searches about SEO and AI search tools, and 208 of the 487 AI Overviews they showed (43%) loaded that way, so a check that only reads the first response can miss them. Treat each result as a snapshot: Google changes AI Overviews often.

Why you rank but aren't cited

Of the 1,183 pages cited by AI Overviews in our October 2026 sample, 378 (32%) also ranked in the top 10 for the same search. The rest came from further down the results, or from pages that didn't rank for that exact search. Google's AI features also run related searches in the background (query fan-out), which is one way a page that doesn't rank for your search can still end up cited.

An AI Overview cites a few pages, and a page can rank well on overall relevance to a search without being one of the pages the AI Overview directly cites. Compare your page with the ones that were cited: where they put the answer, which facts they state (prices, numbers, steps), and whether they answer the exact search or a broader topic.

The fixes are usually pretty straightforward. Put the answer first, state facts plainly, keep each page focused on one question, and make sure the page is indexed and allowed to show a snippet (no nosnippet tag). Structured data that matches the visible page helps Google read it too. The free AEO checker scores a page on these points.

Why you don't rank and aren't cited

Not ranking on the first page at all requires more work to fix. In this case, it means either your page is not relevant enough to the search, you don't have enough authority, or both. This requires more in-depth SEO fixes like building links to improve authority, rewriting your pages to target keywords more precisely and more.

The good thing is that usually these SEO fixes can help to some extent with showing up in the AI Overviews too.

How often AI Overviews show up

It depends on the search. In our October 2026 sample of 493 searches about SEO and AI search tools, 487 showed an AI Overview. That's one niche, and other kinds of searches can look very different.

Country, language and device all seem to have an effect too. AI Overviews only show in supported countries and languages, and mobile results can differ from desktop. The checker reports what one load of the page showed for the country you picked, so re-check the searches that matter to you often.

One-off checks and weekly tracking

A free check tells you whether you're in the AI Overview for a handful of searches today. For the searches that matter, you need the same check repeated over weeks, and you need the other AI engines too. ChatGPT often cites different sites from the ones Google ranks: across 198 questions, on average only 13.5% of the domains ChatGPT cited also showed up in Google's organic results for the same question.

Peak Answer's AI visibility tracker runs your buying questions on 6 engines, Google AI Overviews included, daily for your top 10 questions and weekly for the rest, and records the cited pages each time. To see whether ChatGPT names your brand, try the free AI visibility checker.

Common questions

Yes. It's free and doesn't require an account or login. Each check covers up to five searches.
Google changes results by location, language, device and signed-in history. The checker loads a signed-out desktop search in the US by default. Pick the country you sell in, and run the check again on another day.
Not on its own. Structured data helps Google read a page and can earn rich results, so keep it accurate, but the text on the page is what the AI Overviews quote.
A signed-out desktop search in the US by default. You can pick another country before you run the check.
Not always. Both draw on Google's index, so the results are usually similar, but they're separate features that write different answers. This checker covers AI Overviews only.
The AI Overview checker looks at Google's AI Overviews for searches you choose. The AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT five buying questions about your category and shows whether it names your brand.
